How to Create and Manage a Website on Your PalmHost Hosting

Manage your website in the PalmHost hosting panel

Your PalmHost hosting account provides the tools needed to host and manage a website. The main areas you are likely to use are your website files, databases, SSL settings and other website management tools.

Open your website management area

  1. Log in to your PalmHost Client Area.
  2. Select Services.
  3. Open the hosting service you want to manage.
  4. Select Manage Service.
  5. Choose Login to Control Panel.
  6. Open Websites in the hosting panel.

Find the website you want to manage and select Manage to access the tools available for that website.

Website files

Your website files contain the code, images, stylesheets and other files that make up your website.

The hosting panel provides file and FTP-related tools that can be used to upload, download and manage website files. These tools are useful when uploading a new website, replacing existing files or working with files supplied by a web developer.

Take care when deleting or replacing files. Changes to the website's files can affect how the website loads.

Databases

Many websites use a database to store information separately from their website files. WordPress, for example, uses a database for settings, content and other website data.

Database management is available through the hosting panel's Databases & FTP area.

If you are installing or moving a website that requires a database, make sure the database details used by the website match the database and user that have been created on the hosting account.

SSL and HTTPS

SSL allows a website to use HTTPS rather than an unencrypted HTTP connection. Your hosting panel includes SSL management tools for websites hosted on your account.

Open your website's management options and look for the available SSL settings.

After making DNS or SSL-related changes, it may take some time before the changes are visible everywhere. If HTTPS is not working as expected, check that the domain is pointing to the correct hosting service and that the SSL certificate has been issued for the relevant domain.

Manage DNS records

DNS settings are managed from the website management area rather than the main panel navigation.

  1. Open Websites.
  2. Select Manage for the relevant website.
  3. Open DNS.
  4. Review or manage the DNS records available for the website.

DNS changes can take time to propagate because DNS information may be cached by different resolvers.

WordPress websites

If you are running WordPress, the hosting panel also includes WordPress-related tools. These can be accessed from the WordPress section of the hosting panel.

For a new WordPress website, use the available WordPress installation tools rather than manually uploading WordPress files unless you have a specific reason to do so.

Backups

The hosting panel includes a Backups area where the backup features available to your account can be accessed.

Before making significant changes to a website, such as replacing files or making database changes, check what backup options are available to you.

A simple website management workflow

For many routine website tasks, the process is straightforward:

  1. Open Services in your PalmHost Client Area.
  2. Open your hosting service and select Login to Control Panel.
  3. Open Websites and select Manage.
  4. Use the relevant tool for the task, such as files, databases, SSL or DNS.
  5. Test the website after making changes.

Be careful when making technical changes

Some hosting-panel settings can affect your website, email or domain. If you are unsure what a setting does, avoid changing it until you have confirmed what it is used for.

Keep a record of important settings before making significant changes, particularly when working with website files, databases or DNS records.
